Tear Gas in the Morning

The trailer preview above was animated by David Sheen. My graphic novel, Tear Gas in the Morning, is the story of Barbara Silverman, a Jewish American artist volunteering as a human rights worker with the non-violent resistance in the West Bank, Palestine. The story is loosely based on my personal experiences from 2006-2009 working with the International Solidarity Movement and the experiences of real life Palestinians, Israelis, and international volunteers that I met during my time in Palestine. Tear Gas in the Morning came about after a friend of mine read the incident reports on my blog documenting violence and human rights abuses in the West Bank. When the friend commented “I hope you’re saving this for a book”, my response was, “Well I’m not really a writer, but I guess I can draw.” The resulting comic was supposed to appear as a weekly strip in the English language newspaper The Palestine Times, however the newspaper went out of business before the first strip could be published. At the encouragement of many friends, I enrolled in the Academy of Art University’s graphic novel MFA program, and the result is the first installment of Tear Gas in the Morning: A story of Nonviolent Resistance. page 0, right click for a larger version page 1, right click for a larger version
